"Alex has been a big help to my son in preparation for his English Higher. She has given him a lot of confidence in dealing with Close Reading, which he had found difficult. I would not hesitate to recommend Alex to anyone who is needing some extra help with English - it can mean the difference between failing and getting a good grade in exams."

"Alex is lovely, she really fires my daughter's enthusiasm to learn. She is enthusiastic towards the work my daughter is putting in, and by doing so, she is drawing more out of my daughter, adding the extra description to her sentences, or suggesting areas of further exploration. Alex listens to areas of need and how to address those in a positive and supporting way to a kid who has struggled to engage in education due to dyslexia."
Tutor reply: Thank you Emma. It’s my absolute pleasure. She has put in the hard work of engaging, and is a delight to teach.

A success story
Chloe was a dyslexic student I first began tutoring when she was in P6. She struggled with English and explained to me that when the teacher would say "look the word up in a dictionary, Chloe wouldn't know where to look because her dyslexia meant that she often did not know which letter the word might begin with." This was enlightening, for me as a tutor and teacher. However, Chloe had a very vivid imagination, so we worked on creative writing prompts which she engaged with beautifully. She ended up collecting a whole file of short pieces over the course of the years I taught her. In addition, we would work on close reading and textual analysis as she progressed through school. I continued to teach Chloe, with great success, through to National 5 and then Higher English, still often using creative writing prompts, and I am proud to say that she achieved an A in English, went on to study English as an Advanced Higher, and consequently went to University. Dyslexia did not hold her back, and the important keystone here was that she was engaged by stories and the idea of stories. It made all the difference, and it built her confidence.
